Blank Pages, Busy Mind: Thoughts on Writer’s Block

Writer's picture: Amary BluAmary Blu

Every writer has dealt with writer's block at least once. If they have not...then I would like to borrow their brain because HOW DO YOU DO IT???

A typewriter with the word 'story' in the middle.

My writing is in the form of these blogs. I like to express my thoughts like I am having a conversation with someone hence the subtitle of my blog 'Thoughts on Life and Writing Blog'.

There are many different writers out there like authors, songwriters, poets, etc. All of them like to express themselves through their choice of storytelling. I can't imagine how someone can create a whole story out of their imagination like authors do, especially if they write fantasy or sci-fi novels. Where do you even begin honestly?

I have a feeling this post will be short since I’m discussing writer’s block. It would be ironic if I still managed to write a long post despite that!

It's like there are two types of writer's block.

  1. When you have a topic but have NO IDEA what to write.

  2. When you REALLY want to write something but have no clue what to write about.

And honestly, I don't know which one is worse. But if I have to choose one to live with then I will choose the first one. Having a topic or a certain feeling can go a long way when it comes to writing. You can write a bunch of things where some may be the worst writing of your life but once you pick bits and pieces out of it...believe me everything clears up.

Before I started writing I used to read how many authors or other creative writers have many drafts before they publish something. I immediately thought "Jeez how exhausting and time-consuming".

But now I see how necessary that is. Most of my posts are never the first draft. That sounds so exaggerated since I don't really HAVE that many drafts, my apologies for the dramatics. What I meant is...I reread what I write a lot which makes me change a lot of things. I seem to have plenty of ideas after just sitting with my writer's block for a few moments, days, or even months.

Sometimes drafts will remain just what they are. Drafts.

I have a topic, I start writing, my mind gets blank and I never open that document again. I even lost the feeling I had while writing about that topic. Before you know it, time goes by and I forget what I was writing in the first place.

It's so annoying once you get stuck because what is next? Do you push through and finish it? Start over and hope for the best? Or just continue with a different project?

I guess that depends on what you are writing because if YOU start over with writing a book then you really lost your mind. Some people take YEARS to write a book and I don't even know if that includes writer's block or not.

All I am saying...if you land in this phase then I hope something beautiful and creative comes out of it. And since I don't have many ideas anymore on what to write about (haha see what I did there) I will leave it here.

This post does not contain any tips or tricks on how to deal with writer's block. If you like me to create a post about this then let me know in the comments.

ALSO, I would love to hear how YOU deal with writer's block:)
